This 1977 oil painting follows Katz's tradition started around 1964 of painting large scale portraits of his friends and colleagues against a solid background. His style is straightforward, using light and shading to imply face shape, instead of belaboring over the small details. The warm tones on the couple's faces are contrasted by the cool grey behind them. Katz's work anticipates movements such as Pop Art and New Perceptual Realism with his use of color and simplification for form but remains distinctive from it through his backgrounds and technique.
